Here's an interesting quote from that article, bearing on the bore shape: "This plane A profile has a ragged resemblance to the sort of thing found in many other cornetts, and that seems to be basically a simple cone with a Zeppelin-shaped swelling from thumbhole to hole six, then some waisting below this point, and often a final flare. One may however prefer to see such a profile the way Mersenne describes it (Harmonie Universelle, 1636), that is, as two cones meeting at the first hole, the lower having a lesser rate of expansion than the upper. Yet the curious thing is that when the measurements of this Christ Church cornett are averaged out so that one can arrive at what the bore would be with a circular cross section throughout, one practically arrives at a single, simple cone."
